Figures are challenging enough - add to it the hovering-above perspective and you are faced with painting what you see and not what you know. We are - everything is - form, shape and color. Be patient with it, take it slow, pay attention to comparing the individuals with each other to get it right. The floor patterns and the light are elements that make it interesting, albeit tougher. Have fun and Happy Halloween.

This challenge ends 6 pm EST on Wednesday, November 18th - then we'll take a holiday break.

What I want you to do in the meantime is have a color, digital photo taken of yourself and get it ready for our annual year-end portrait swap. I'll ask for those photos between November 19th - December 1st, so get yours ready to go. Look back on last year's post for how this works.

I love this photograph! The dramatic colors and lighting, the moving figures, the angle are all going to be fun to paint. Thanks Karin.

Karin, I'm a huge fan of your site. Everyone does such a great job. I just wanted to say that I miss your link where all the thumbnails come up and you can see all the painting on one page.

I can't wait to see the portrait swap again. :)

What a nice bunch of work. I really enjoyed working with this image. Initially I found it so strong that it was hard to get past the first impression. But then I kept finding more nuances and relationships that reinforced the overall image. Just a really great photo.
One thing that really struck me was the quality of light...that blueish ether that you see in public places like this coupled with intense natural light, which is blueish as well. Its really interesting that the majority of the paintings submitted react to that coolness by warming up the colors. I am an architect, and that suggests a lot to me about peoples' response to space and color. Comments anyone?
