This new challenge was chosen for the purpose of getting the human figure right. I think a lot of artists avoid figurative paintings because they lack the confidence in getting the human figure right. It takes a lot of time and a lot of practice knowing the body - but let me give you some thoughts, before you start this new challenge.

- Take time to do a sketch of the figure. It's when you feel out the bends, the weight, the length of the arms and legs, the clothing, etc. Taking that knowledge to the canvas or board or paper really does help - you're more familiar with the subject. It adds to the flow of the progression.

- The success of your painting lies in the accuracy of the figure, so put your best efforts in getting it right before you work on the rest of the piece. And don't give up until you do get it right. You will - just keep working at it. Resist finishing up the rest of the scene, the chair, the wall, even the details of the clothing - until you've convinced yourself the figure is right.

Some tips:

- measure distances ( with your paintbrush, your finger, no need to get a ruler) and compare the lengths and widths of the body to each other. You'll always be able to spot something amiss by doing this.

- remember we are 3-dimensional objects. If you have trouble with a 'cardboard cut-out' look, think of the body like a slinky. The edges curve with the bends. Almost imagine the side you
cannot see when your painting a human figure.

- pay great attention to where the weight of the body lands.

- when I say 'the accuracy of the figure' , I do not mean this gentleman has to look exactly like the photograph. A likeness, yes, but this challenge is to get the human figure right. If you choose to make his shirt green, I don't mind - if you put him in another setting, I don't mind. I'm asking you to work on the figurative aspect. To some, it'll come easy - to some, it won't. But don't give up..... I know you can do it.

Take your time - you've got 3 weeks. I'm traveling some this month, so I'm stretching this out until Wednesday, July 29th. Enjoy.

Thanks for the tips anyway. I also like to paint a figure. Sometimes I'm satisfied with the results, sometimes I'm disappointed.
